Stepping up to the stage to accept an Oscar is a monumental personal achievement for any filmmaker, but Loyola Academy graduate Matthew Cherry eschewed the tradition of thanking the film’s backers and his family to call for change on Sunday night at the 92nd Academy Awards.

Cherry, who won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for “Hair Love,” knew he only had a matter of moments before the music started to play him off stage, so he wasted no time calling attention to the story of his special guest Deandre Arnold.
